Kaikoura (KAI means food and KOURA means crayfish)
Kaikoura
has a majestic feel to it and Lemon Tree Lodge is ideally
situated to take in this magnificent splendour of the Seaward
Kaikoura snow capped Mountain Range as it falls down to the
Ocean level. It
has become a very popular eco tourism destination not only
because of its stunning scenery, but also for the abundance
of marine life, plant life and bird life. Kaikoura is situated
on the east coast of the South island about 187 kilometres
from Christchurch.
Just
the drive or the train journey alone has to be one of the
nicest drives anywhere in New Zealand as you enter Kaikoura
either from the north or the south. The rail track and road
run parallel following the contours of the mountain on one
side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.
Kaikoura
has to be one the top sites in the world to observe a wide
range of wildlife. Because the nutrient rich waters it attracts
one of the grandest creatures in the world - the giant Sperm
Whale. These magnificent creatures are present all year round
just off the coastline. These same waters also attract large
pods of Dusky Dolphins and occasionally Bottlenose and Common
dolphins. One of the smallest and rarest, the Hector Dolphin
may also be seen swimming just off the shoreline. Fur seals,
sea and land birds, bush and mountain creatures and plant
life all go to make Kaikoura a popular destination for visitors
from all over the world.
The
climate in Kaikoura is moderate and lying in the "sun-belt"
it can boast of having over 2000 sunshine hours a year. Although
Kaikoura only has a population of around 4,000 people it had
a wonderful selection of cafés and restaurants. No
visit here is complete without trying its locally caught crayfish.
Activities
around Kaikoura are plentiful, and we have listed some of
these below. We are more than pleased to book any activities
while you are here in Kaikoura or other accommodation and
